Ethnic/Racial Maps of Nevada - Noely

Comparing the Total Population Density and White Population Alone Density

Total Population Density ACS 2020 (5-year Estimates)
Total White Population Density ACS 2020 (5-year Estimates)

The first map shows the total population density of Nevada using the ACS 2020 (5-year estimates) statistics. The second map shows the total white population density of Nevada using the same statistics and same representative bubble size representing a value of 448,000. When these two maps are presented side by side, comparatively, they are not so different. Yes, the bubble sizes get smaller in some counties but not by a large margin. The counties in Northeastern Nevada's bubbles barely change in size when switching to the White only population. Most notably, Eureka County's total population is 1,839 people while their total White population is 1,742 people. That's only a difference of 97 people and 94.73% of a total White population! The counties where the bubble sizes noticeably change are by no surprise the more populated regions. The Northern Sierra region of Nevada has more diversity in Washoe County and in the Southern Region, in Clark County. Next, will be a breakdown of the groups who contribute to the racial/ethnic diversity.

Hispanic or Latino Percent of Population ACS 2020 (5-Year Estimates)

This is a map of the total Hispanic or Latino population percentage using ACS 2020 five year statistics. The Hispanic/Latino demographic is the second largest ethnic group of Nevada. The 2020 Census gathered that Nevada's Hispanic population is 18.7% (Census Bureau). When looking at the map you can see where most of the hispanic population is dispersed. Unsurprisingly, the higher percentages of Hispanics are in the Northern Sierra region and Southern region. Clark County has the highest relative percentage of 31% of the residents being Hispanic. Hispanic populations tend to congregate in more urbanized and opportunity driven areas. That is why we see a large percentage of Hispanics in Clark County because it houses the biggest city in Nevada, which is Las Vegas. Surprisingly, however, the second highest percentage is Esmeralda County which had one of the lowest populations of Nevada counties.

American Indian or Alaska Native Percent of Population ACS 2020 (5-year Estimates)

This map shows the percentages of the American Indian or Alaska Native population relative to total population. According the the 2020 Census Bureau Nevada has an American Indian and Alaska Native of 1.1% alone (Census Bureau). Although this a small percentage compared to the third most of Black alone with 12.4% I think it's interesting to point out a really underrepresented group. Of the 1.1% most of the American Indians make up more of the population is in Northeastern Nevada. However, there is one outlier which is Mineral County. American Indians make up 20.41% of the Mineral County population! This is because the Walker River Reservation is mostly in Mineral County.

Shaded in red is the Walker River Reservation

What This Means for the Election

Throughout recent American history, minorities tend to vote Democrat because they feel that the Democratic party aligns with their interest more than the Republican Party who is more conservative and less progressive. The large white majority in Nevada can be seen in the polls where they dominate most are counties which a high republican turnout. Although Native Americans dominate in Northeastern Nevada they are only 1.1% of the population and do not hold a large political impact. It is more promising for the Hispanic population to be able to sway Nevada more Democratic since they dominate in big counties like Clark County.

This could be very interesting in terms of what this means for the election as Latino voters are very unpredictable coming into this election, and despite the density in Las Vegas it is very hard to tell whether the state will lean blue or red.

Post Election Update: It was actually NOT promising for the hispanic population to sway leftwards.
